Kaashidhoo Gets Physiotherapy, Ending Need to Travel to Male’

Physiotherapy services have officially been inaugurated at the Kaafu Kaashidhoo Health Centre. The service was officially launched during a special ceremony held at the health centre by the Minister of Health, Family and Welfare, Geela Ali. Following the inauguration, the Minister inspected the facility and met with health centre staff to discuss the services provided and the challenges they face.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Geela stated that introducing physiotherapy is a significant step in the Government’s ongoing efforts to make essential healthcare easily accessible to the public. She highlighted that this is a much needed service for the residents of Kaashidhoo, who had long faced difficulties accessing such care. Furthermore, the Minister noted that Kaashidhoo Health Centre is the first island health centre where services have commenced under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s special initiative to introduce physiotherapy across health centres nationwide.

Emphasising the vital role of physiotherapy, particularly in treating physical difficulties associated with ageing, the Minister noted that the service will allow senior citizens and persons with disabilities to receive treatment on their home island without having to travel elsewhere. She added that expanding access to such essential services will strengthen the nation’s healthcare system and enhance the overall health and quality of life for residents.

Previously, the absence of physiotherapy services on the island meant patients had to travel by sea to Malé for treatment. This incurred significant travel expenses and caused severe hardship for residents, particularly during periods of rough seas and adverse weather.

Kaashidhoo Health Centre operates on a 24-hour basis and attends to an average of 25 to 30 patients daily. The facility is equipped with 8 inpatient beds and provides general medical consultations, laboratory services, and electrocardiogram (ECG) testing. In addition, preparations are currently under way to introduce X-ray and ultrasound scanning services at the centre.
