Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with China’s Hainan Economic Development Company to explore exporting Maldivian fish products to the Chinese market.
The agreement was signed on 28 October 2026 during the Maldives-China Investment Forum held in the Maldives. MIFCO’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Anas, signed on behalf of the Maldivian company, while Chief Advisor Ao Weiguo signed for Hainan Economic Development.
Under the partnership, both sides will work together to study market demand in China and prepare fish supply arrangements. This includes setting product standards, packaging requirements, logistics, and legal frameworks needed to enter the Chinese market. MIFCO will act as the fish supplier, while Hainan Economic Development will assist in identifying commercial opportunities and handling market arrangements in China.
During the first phase, both companies plan to conduct feasibility studies. They will also discuss plans to begin and steadily increase export volumes starting from 2027, based on market demand and logistical capacity.
The agreement marks an important step toward opening new international markets for Maldivian fisheries products and strengthening trade ties between the Maldives and China.
